Thai Ridgeback Dog history and origins
An ancient, primitive breed native to eastern Thailand, developed for hunting small game, vermin control, and serving as a guard dog. Its isolation in the region preserved its unique characteristics, including the dorsal ridge, for centuries. One of only three breeds with hair ridge.

Males typically weigh 23-34 kg and stand 56-61 cm at the shoulder; females 16-25 kg and 51-56 cm.

Short and smooth.
The ridge on the top region is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.
It should be clearly defined from other parts of the back.
There are various shapes and lengths of ridge, but must be symmetrical on either side of the backbone and within the width of the back.

A tubular skin defect running along the dorsal midline towards the spine, present from birth, caused by the same FGF3/FGF4/FGF19/ORAOV1 gene duplication that produces the breed's ridge. It can trap debris, become repeatedly infected, and usually needs surgical removal; dogs with two copies of the duplication are at substantially higher risk than dogs with one.

A DNA 'ridge zygosity' test on both parents, showing whether each carries one or two copies of the duplication (offered for this breed specifically by GenoCan and other laboratories). This predicts relative risk, not presence — it does not replace a physical check of the puppy's back at birth and over the following weeks.
