Medium-sized spitz-type dog with a fox-like face, thick double coat, pricked ears, and plumed tail, known for its loyalty and protective nature

Thai Bangkaew Dog history and origins

Originated from Wat Bangkaew monastery in early 20th century from a cross between a native domestic dog and wild canid. Developed as guard dog and companion in rural Thailand, traditionally kept as watchdogs. Recognized by FCI in Group 5.

Thai Bangkaew Dog appearance and size

Males typically weigh 16-20.5 kg and stand 46-53 cm at the shoulder; females 14-18 kg and 41-51 cm.

Double coat.

Guard coat straight and coarse, undercoat soft and dense.

Moderately long on body, longer around neck and shoulders forming a ruff that is more pronounced in males than in females.

Back of forelegs covered with feathering diminishing to pasterns.

Backside of hindlegs covered with long hair to the hocks.

Coat length never to be so exaggerated as to obscure the body shape.

  • Often in any shade of ‘lemon’, red, fawn, tan, or grey, with or without more or less blackened hair tips, even to the extent of looking tri-coloured, also white with solid black patches.
  • Preferred: Any shape or distribution of patches, but symmetrical markings on head, covering eyes and ears, preferred, with or without a dark mask and preferably with a white marking around the muzzle
  • Permissible: Slight ticking in the white in an otherwise excellent specimen
