Nothing hereditary is documented for the Tennessee Rex breed, but there is still specific documentation to request from any breeder before paying a deposit. A responsible breeder will have these readily available; deflection is a red flag.
No breed-specific hereditary condition is well documented for this very recently established breed, first found in a semi-feral litter in Tennessee in 2004 and admitted by TICA as a preliminary breed in 2009. That absence is the expected outcome for a breed this new and drawn from this few founders, not evidence the breed is unusually healthy or unhealthy.
What to ask for anyway
- Cardiologist echocardiogram on both parents (HCM screening)
- PKD1 DNA test or renal ultrasound
- FeLV/FIV status of the breeding cats
