What is a Shiba?

An ancient Japanese spitz breed with a small, compact, well-muscled frame and distinctive fox-like appearance. Known for its spirited personality, confident bearing, and agile movement.

Shiba history and origins

One of Japan's six oldest native breeds, originally developed for hunting small game in mountainous terrain. Nearly extinct after WWII but saved through dedicated breeding programs. First brought to the United States in 1954.

Shiba appearance and size

Males typically weigh 8-11 kg and stand 37-42 cm at the shoulder; females 7-9 kg and 34-39 cm.

Lo que el estándar penaliza

Aquello por lo que un juez resta puntos a la raza Shiba, y lo que la deja fuera del ring, en las palabras del propio registro. Esto describe el estándar de la raza — no es una lista de comprobación para el animal que tienes delante, y un animal de compañía con un defecto descalificante es un perro que no puede ir a exposición, no un perro enfermo.

Brain & nerves

GM1 gangliosidosis

Serious

A fatal inherited storage disease (GLB1 gene) in which a fatty compound builds up in nerve cells. Affected puppies develop poor growth, tremor and loss of balance from around 5 to 6 months old and do not survive much past 18 months.

DNA test result for the Shiba-specific GLB1 mutation (c.1668delC) on both parents.

GM2 gangliosidosis

Serious

A second, distinct fatal storage disease (HEXB gene) with a very similar course to GM1 gangliosidosis — poor growth, tremor and progressive loss of coordination in puppyhood — but caused by a different mutation, so a clear GM1 result does not cover it.

DNA test result for the Shiba-specific HEXB mutation (c.618_620delCCT) on both parents; a separate test from GM1, though some labs sell the two as a combined panel.
