Medium-sized Swedish tricolor scent hound with athletic build and noble appearance, bred for endurance and skill in hunting fox and hare over challenging terrain

Hamiltonstovare history and origins

Developed in the late 19th century by Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton using English Foxhounds, Harriers, and German hounds including Holsteiner Hounds to create a dedicated Swedish hunting breed

Hamiltonstovare appearance and size

Males typically stand 52-61 cm at the shoulder and females 48-57 cm.

On head, ears and front of legs coat should be very short and smooth.

Tricolour

  • On the adult dog black colour to form a mantle to continue on upper side of neck and upper side of tail.
  • Tan on head, ears and legs, as well as on sides of the neck, on shoulders, under body, on thighs and under the tail.
  • Clear marking between the black mantel and the tan on thighs.
  • The tan colour can range from a golden tint to a rich, deep rusty red.
  • Permissible: White markings as a blaze, on throat, upper side of neck, collar, on brisket, tip of tail and lower part of legs and on feet
