What is a Nebelung?
Medium-sized, elegant cat with long, silky blue-gray coat and green eyes. Longhaired version of Russian Blue.
Nebelung history and origins
Developed in the 1980s from longhaired Russian Blue-type cats. Name means 'creature of the mist' in German. Combines Russian Blue personality with elegant long coat. TICA recognized.
Nebelung appearance and size
Typically 3.2-5 kg and 25-33 cm at the shoulder — published as one range rather than separately for males and females.
Nebelung temperament and personality
Generally described as gentle, quiet, shy, playful, reserved and loyal.

Nothing hereditary is documented for the Nebelung breed, but there is still specific documentation to request from any breeder before paying a deposit. A responsible breeder will have these readily available; deflection is a red flag.
No breed-specific hereditary condition is well documented for the Nebelung. It is a young breed (developed in the 1980s) with a small gene pool descended largely from Russian Blues. TICA's own breed page states the Nebelung is 'considered overall a healthy, but still relatively new breed.' General sources note that any condition a Russian Blue could have is theoretically possible here too, but that is a theoretical extension, not a documented finding in the Nebelung itself, so it is not listed as a risk.
What to ask for anyway
- Cardiologist echocardiogram on both parents (general HCM screening; no Nebelung-specific marker exists)
- General veterinary health check and line/pedigree history, given the breed's small founding population
- FeLV/FIV status of the breeding cats
