- Entirely mottled (black and white) giving a slate blue effect
- marked or not with more or less extended black patches.
- Two black patches are generally placed at either side of the head, covering the leathers, surrounding the eyes and stopping at the cheeks.
- They do not meet on top of the skull, they leave a white interval in the middle of which is frequently found a little black oval shaped spot, typical of the breed.
- There are two more or less bright tan markings above the superciliary arches giving a “quatroeuillé” effect to the eyes.
- Equally one finds traces of tan on the cheeks, the lips, the inner face of the leathers, on the legs and under the tail

About
What the breed standard says
- Bred for
- Multipurpose hound used for hunting the hare with the gun. His keenness and fine nose make of him also a precious assistant in the tracking of the wild boar
- Behaviour and temperament
“Fine nose, good voice, intent in his way of hunting, but also full of keenness and enterprise. Temperament alert, even overwhelmingly agitated but yet affectionate”
Quoted from FCI standard n°32. It describes the breed the registry recognises, not any individual animal.

Pros & cons
Pros & cons for the Blue Gascony Griffon
What you get with the Blue Gascony Griffon
- Purpose stated in the standard: “Multipurpose hound used for hunting the hare with the gun”
- The standard describes the breed as: “Fine nose, good voice, intent in his way of hunting, but also full of keenness and enterprise”
What you are taking on
- High grooming needs — the standard’s own description is “Hard, rough and shaggy”
Drawn from sources rather than written as an opinion — cited health research, the registry’s own standard, and peer-reviewed longevity. FCI breed standard. One breeder’s animals can differ from any of it, and an empty column means we hold nothing for that side rather than that there is nothing to say.

What to ask for in a Blue Gascony Griffon
No breed-specific health panel has been written up for the Blue Gascony Griffon on this platform yet. That is a gap in our records, not a clean bill of health — ask the breeder which hereditary conditions their lines are tested for, and ask to see the results for both parents, dated and from a named laboratory.
