What is a Schillerstovare?

A medium-sized, noble Swedish scenthound with a distinctive tan coat and black mantle, known for its athletic nature and exceptional ability as a hunter of fox and hare. This energetic Scandinavian breed combines endurance with keen scenting abilities.

Schillerstovare history and origins

Developed in the late 19th century by Swedish farmer Per Schiller, who crossed Swiss and German scenthounds with local hounds and English Harrier-type hounds. Created to be an exceptional hunter of fox and hare, first exhibited in 1907.

Schillerstovare appearance and size

Males typically stand 55-61 cm at the shoulder and females 52-59 cm.

  • Black to cover back of neck and the back, upper part of shoulders, sides of the trunk, the loin and on upper side of tail.
  • Tan to cover head, throat, chest, lower part of shoulders, forelegs, hind legs reaching up to hips and under tail.
  • Tan colour in nuances from golden to rich and deep tan.
  • Permissible: Slight white markings on chest and toes
  • Permissible: Black hair mingled in the tan not in adult specimen
