Developed in the Vendée region of France before World War I from the larger Grand Griffon Vendéen. Selectively bred down in size by the Comte d'Elva to create a smaller faster hound for hunting medium game like hare and fox. Nearly decimated by World Wars but carefully restored
Typically 22-24 kg and 48-56 cm at the shoulder — published as one range rather than separately for males and females.
