- Entirely mottled (black and white) giving a slate blue effect
- marked or not with more or less extended black patches.
- Two black patches are generally placed on either side of the head, covering the leathers, surrounding the eyes and stopping at the cheeks.
- They do not meet on top of the skull, they leave a white interval in the middle of which is frequently found a small oval shaped black spot, typical of the breed.
- Two more or less bright tan markings are placed above the superciliary arches, giving a “quatreoeuillé” effect to the eyes.
- Tan traces are found on the cheeks, the lips, the inner face of the leathers, on the legs and under the tail

About
What the breed standard says
- Bred for
- Hound used to hunt with the gun, sometimes for coursing, as much on his own as in a pack. His preferred quarries are the rabbit and the hare
- Behaviour and temperament
“Very fine nose. Active, agile and lively. Intent in his way of hunting; endowed with a beautiful howling voice. Works perfectly in a pack. Affectionate and happy dog; need to frisk about”
Quoted from FCI standard n°35. It describes the breed the registry recognises, not any individual animal.

- Exercise needsRead from what the breed was bred to do, in the registry’s own words: “Hound used to hunt with the gun, sometimes for coursing, as much on his own as in a pack. His preferred quarries are the rabbit and the hare” That is a working purpose, not a measured exercise requirement — an individual dog’s needs depend on its age, health and household.

What you are taking on
Nobody has written this side yet. It is a judgement rather than data, so it waits for a person — not for a missing source.
Drawn from sources rather than written as an opinion — cited health research, the registry’s own standard, and peer-reviewed longevity. FCI breed standard. One breeder’s animals can differ from any of it, and an empty column means we hold nothing for that side rather than that there is nothing to say.

Preferred, permissible, undesirable and disqualifying are FCI’s own words about the breed. They describe what the standard asks for — not an assessment of any individual dog, and not ours.
Shortened from FCI standard n°35 — each label is the standard’s own wording with the verdict lifted into the tag beside it. Read the full clause at source.

Health guide
What to ask for in a Blue Gascony Basset
No breed-specific health panel has been written up for the Blue Gascony Basset on this platform yet. That is a gap in our records, not a clean bill of health — ask the breeder which hereditary conditions their lines are tested for, and ask to see the results for both parents, dated and from a named laboratory.
